What is IIT JAM?
The Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM) is a prestigious, all-India level online entrance examination administered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on a rotational basis under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. This annual examination serves as a gateway for aspiring candidates seeking admission to various postgraduate programs, particularly MSc, at the esteemed IITs. Additionally, successful performance in JAM opens doors to integrated PhD programs at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Notably, several other renowned institutions such as National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) also consider JAM scores for admissions into their MSc programs. Eligibility Criteria
General/OBC Category:
- Candidates must pass the qualifying exam with an aggregate of 55% or obtain a CGPA of 5.5 out of 10.
- In cases where a candidate is promoted in the qualifying exam without a mark sheet, a promotion certificate or an alternative document must be presented. This document should provide evidence of the promotion, including the names of the subjects taken and the marks scored in those subjects during the semester/year.
- The promotion certificate or document should bear the signature of the head of the institute, substantiating the fulfillment of minimum educational requirements (MEQ).
SC/ST/PWD Category:
- Candidates in this category should pass the qualifying exam with an aggregate of 50% or obtain a CGPA of 5 out of 10.
- Similar to the General/OBC category, if a candidate is promoted without a mark sheet, a promotion certificate or an alternative document is required. This document should specify the promoted subjects and the marks obtained during the semester/year.
- The promotion certificate or document, in this case as well, needs to be endorsed by the head of the institute as proof of meeting the minimum educational requirements (MEQ).
Admission Process
- Notification and Application:IITs release the official notification for JAM, usually around September or October each year.Candidates interested in M.Sc and other postgraduate programs apply online on the JAM official website during the application window. The application process typically includes filling out personal details, educational qualifications, and uploading necessary documents.
- Admit Card Download:After successful application, candidates can download their admit cards from the official website within the specified timeframe.
- Examination:IIT JAM is a computer-based test, typically conducted in February. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) as well as numerical answer type questions.
- Declaration of Results:IITs release the JAM results on the official website in March.The results include the candidate’s scorecard and rank.
- Submission of Admission Form:Qualified candidates need to submit an admission form on the JAM online application processing system (JOAPS) within a specified period.
- Counselling and Admission:The admission process includes centralized counseling conducted by the Organizing Institute (OI), which changes every year.Candidates are required to fill their preferences for courses and institutes during the counseling process.Seats are allocated based on merit and choices filled by candidates.
- Document Verification:Shortlisted candidates are required to appear for document verification at the respective IITs or participating institutions.Original documents supporting educational qualifications, category certificates, and other relevant documents need to be presented during this stage.
- Payment of Admission Fee:Candidates who are offered a seat need to pay the admission fee to confirm their acceptance.
- Joining the Institute:Finally, candidates join the allotted institute to pursue their M.Sc or other postgraduate programs.

- Online Registration:Visit the official website of IIT JAM.Look for the registration link and create an account by providing basic details like name, email ID, and mobile number.
- Fill in Application Form:Log in using the credentials created during registration.Complete the application form by entering personal details, educational qualifications, and other required information.
- Upload Documents:Upload scanned copies of documents, including a recent photograph and signature, in the prescribed format.
- Application Fee Payment:Pay the application fee through the available online payment modes. The fee amount may vary for different categories.
- Submit Application:After completing the form and payment, submit the application online.
- Download Admit Card:Once the application process is complete and the application is accepted, candidates can download their admit cards from the official website.
